What's the difference between tax and service charge?

Sales tax is a government-mandated charge applied to purchases (varies by state/country). A service charge is an additional fee added by restaurants or venues for large groups — it goes to the establishment, not directly to the server.

Which US states have the highest sales tax?

Combined state and local rates: Tennessee (9.55%), Louisiana (9.52%), Arkansas (9.51%), Washington (9.23%), and Alabama (9.22%) are among the highest. Our presets help you quickly select common rates.

Can I use this for VAT calculations?

How is the per-person tax amount calculated?

The calculator first computes the total tax (subtotal × tax rate), then the service charge (subtotal × service rate). The sum is divided equally by the number of people. Each person's share is rounded to the nearest cent.
